An Odyssey… or…A Young Love That Lasted

The way people meet and marry is often very interesting. We’d like to hear how you and your mate found each other. Here’s how it happened the second time around in 2013 for 89 year old Bob Humphries and 87 year old Bernie Bluet, pictured here.

They were childhood sweethearts in England. They lost contact in World War II when Bob joined the army and Bernie joined the RAF. He kept sending her love letters but her parents didn’t pass them on. Two years went by without a word from Bob, so she married an RAF pilot and went off to New Zealand. For many decades they lived thousands of miles away from each other. In 2011 a daughter of Bernie’s learned that Bob was still alive.  Bernie headed back to England to her long lost love and in 2013 eight decades after their childhood romance the widow and widower were finally wed.  Bernie said, “When I saw him again I didn’t see an old man – I saw that young soldier. We both feel young at heart.”
