You can’t see it, you can’t feel it, but it’s there. It’s your blood pressure. We all have it. We can’t live without it. But, if it’s too high or if it’s to low then that’s definitely not a good thing. If it’s not in control, something that keeps us alive could be something that can kill us.
So, what do we do. First you have your doctor check it. If it’s normal that’s a good thing. But don’t take it for granted. Have it checked periodically. Change does happen you know.
OK, what do you do about controlling it? According to the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) there two ways, life style and or medication.
Let’s talk about life style first:
Keep your salt (sodium) total fat, saturated fat, and cholesterol low.
Keep your consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables high.
Keep active. Take a move along 10 minute walk 3 times every week on a Monday through Friday schedule.
If you smoke quit. I know, it’s tough. Do it. Check the quit smoking programs for help if you can’t do it alone. Ask your doctor about them. If you don’t smoke don’t start.
If life style changes don’t work, you may need medication. See your doctor.
Keep these levels in mind:
Some medical conditions can raise your risk for high blood pressure. If you have one of these conditions, you can take steps to control it and lower your risk.
Prehypertension is blood pressure that is slightly higher than normal. Prehypertension increases the risk that you will develop chronic, or long-lasting, high blood pressure in the future.
If your blood pressure is between 120/80 mmHg and 139/89 mmHg, you have prehypertension. Learn more about how blood pressure is measured.
You can take steps to control your blood pressure and keep it in a healthy range.
